Bad breath is a commonly occurring health problem. The medical term for it is halitosis. Bad breath is usually the result of poor oral health habits, but it may also be a sign of other health problems. It’s easy to improve your breath and keep your teeth and gums healthy at the same time. Try these simple steps to make your mouth feel fresh and clean. More than 80 per cent of the people suffer from bad breath and generally, the reason for it is gum and teeth.

1.Keep yourself well hydrated

Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist. Chewing sugarless chewing gum can also help to stimulate the saliva production.

2.Clean your tongue

Paying particular attention to your tongue while brushing your teeth can also help with bad breath. Halitosis-causing compounds form on your tongue and in your mouth when bacteria and amino acids combine, causing an unpleasant sulfur-like smell, effectively cleaning your tongue helps keep your breath fresh.

3.Cloves and aniseeds

Cloves and aniseeds contain antiseptic qualities which fights bacteria that cause smelly breath.

4.Floss your teeth

Dental floss or interdental brushes help you reach spaces your toothbrush can’t clean such as the small gaps between your teeth and your gumline. Use floss or an interdental cleaner once daily to remove food particles and plaque between your teeth.

5.Brush your teeth twice a day

If it’s a dental reason then cleaning your teeth is the most important thing you can do. When talking about cleaning, the first thing you should remember is brushing. You should brush at least twice a day at a gap of 12 hours. When you do this the plaque in the oral cavity does not get solidify and become calculus and, hence, you can prevent bad breath. It also prevents the teeth from decaying. Change your manual toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 2 to 3 months and after being ill.

6.Properly rinse your mouth

You don’t just have to rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth but also it is advisable to rinse your mouth properly after every meal to ensure that the debris that gets deposited in between the teeth and tongue are cleaned away.

7.Regular dental visits

Regular checkups allow your dentist to detect any problems such as gum disease or dry mouth and stop them before they become more serious.Your dentist will also be able to answer any questions about flossing, dry mouth, or preferred toothpastes and mouthwash.

8.Fennel seeds

There are certain home treatments that help you fight bad breath. One of which is using herbs like fennel, which is also called as breath sweetener. If you feel your breath smelly, chew some fennel seeds and instantly freshen up your breath.

9.Mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwashes can help to reduce bacteria in your mouth. If you are not sure which mouth rinse to buy, ask your dentist at your next visit. They would be more than happy to recommend one for you.

10.Clean your dentures

Food particles and bacteria can get stuck in between and under dentures. It is essential to take a denture out over night and to clean it thoroughly before reinserting it into the mouth the next morning.

11.Lemon or orange peel

This home remedy effectively helps you get rid of bad breath. After washing the peel thoroughly, chew it for some time. The citric content in these rinds fight bad breath and helps in stimulating salivary glands.

12.Healthy diet

A diet rich in foods which needs to be chewed for a long time (such as carrots and apples) are a great way to increase saliva production in the mouth. Products high in sugar, alcohol and coffee, however, can cause bad breath. Try to limit your intake of these products to avoid halitosis.

13.Quit smoking

Giving up this dangerous habit is good for your body in many ways. Not only will you have better breath, you’ll have a better quality of life.
