Is sleeping more healthy? One study has shown that people who sleep between 7 to 8 hours every night performed better cognitively than those who sleep less than 7 hours. Too little or too much sleep can affect memory. You must aim for the right amount of sleep to lead a healthy life.

The Harvard-based Nurses’ Health Study suggests that the average amount of sleep is seven hours per day. The study leader Elizabeth Devore, an instructor in medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston said, “Our findings suggest that getting an ‘average’ amount of sleep, seven hours per day, may help maintain memory in later life and that clinical interventions based on sleep therapy should be examined for the prevention of [mental] impairment.”

The Nurses’ Health Study conducted a sleep study where a group of women were asked about their sleeping routines in 1986 and 2000. These women participated in interviews about memory and thinking skills three times in six years. Devore and her colleagues observed and found worse performance on brain testing among women who slept only for five hours or fewer hours. Women who slept for nine hours or more also performed worse compared to those who sleep for 7 to 8 hours. These study findings were published online in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

If you are sleeping for six hours a night, it isn’t enough to be more productive. In fact, it is as bad as not sleeping at all. Not getting enough sleep will affect both your health and productivity.

Another sleep deprivation study was published in the journal Sleep, around 48 adults participated and were restricted to sleep to a maximum of 4,6, and 8 hours a night for two weeks. One adult was deprived of sleep for three days continuously.

Sleeping More or Less Can Develop Other Health Problems

Sleep plays an essential role in brain function and systemic physiology in our body system. Sleep disruptions get affected by many reasons such as lifestyle, environmental factors, sleep disorders, and other medical conditions.

A new study suggests that too little or too much sleep is equally bad for health. People who sleep for more than 10 hours or less than six hours face a higher risk of metabolic syndrome like high blood pressure.

Several scientists admit that there is no alternative for a regular sleep schedule. The regular may vary from person to person, depending on whether a person is a night owl, early bird, or an introvert.

Sleep routine divides people. Some people believe that there is nothing more important than getting enough sleep while others want to spend more time doing other activities. Did you know? In the United States of America around 50 to 70 million people have a sleep disorder. One-third of adults are not getting enough sleep hours.

According to the new study, it creates health problems if you sleep too little or too much. In this study, A total number of 133,608 Korean (44,930 men, 88,678 women) were enrolled and their sleeping durations were assessed. The result showed that men who slept for six hours or less per night had a higher risk of facing metabolic syndromes such as high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and fat around the waist. Those who slept more than 10 hours didn’t have better results. They were also at the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and tend to accumulate fat around the waist.

Hence, based on these studies, sleeping more or sleeping less is not healthy. it is proved that under-sleepers and over-sleepers both can face health issues.
