One way to conceptualize instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) is as the more sophisticated tasks and activities necessary to maintain independence, stability, and safety. Typical instances of IADLs for seniors could be:

Taking Care of Their Home. This might include doing laundry, cleaning up, taking care of a pet, and so on.
Cooking and Meal Preparation.
Shopping and Running Errands.

Managing Money and Personal Finances
such as creating a budget, keeping tabs on spending, making payments, and so forth.

Managing Medications.
This could entail calling in to request prescription refills when necessary or remembering to take specific prescriptions on particular days.

Driving and/or Using Public Transit.
