Stop Diarrhea at Home

Diarrhoea is a condition which causes increased frequency of bowel movements with loose and watery stools often accompanied with stomach pain.  In Siddha it is known as Perumkazhichal noi, usually caused by abnormal food habits causing derangement of Vatham.

Having at least three loose motions in 24 hours is considered as diarrhoea in modern science. Diarrhoea is a very common problem affecting all age groups at one time or another. Diarrhoea is most commonly caused by the infections of bacteria, viruses and parasites in digestive system. These microbes generally enter the digestive system through infected food, water, milk, flesh or other eatables. Diseases like cholera and typhoid also cause diarrhoea. Non-infectious conditions that can cause diarrhoea are inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal allergies, intolerance to lactose or gluten and hyperthyroidism.

1.Consume 1/2 glass of strong black tea(without sugar) with 1/2 slice of lemon juice,this is one of the best remedy for diarrhea.

2.Never discard the peels of pomegranate. Cut the peels into small pieces, place them over a plate in the sun in such a way that no peels overlap each other. Repeat this till the peels loses all moisture and become hard. After peels gets hard, preserve them in an air tight container. For diarrhoea and dysentery, take 3-5 small pieces, add a glass of water and boil. Take this medicated water 30-40 ml at regular intervals until the problem subsides. This is one of the most effective, traditional home remedies. The peels contain tannins which is a very powerful astringent, helps to reduce inflammation of intestines and stops bleeding and loose motions. Also effective for colitis and bleeding piles.

3.Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar and half a teaspoon of common salt in a cup of water. Small doses of this mixture (around a quarter cup) can be given whenever the patient is thirsty.

4.Mix 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger and cumin powder with honey to make a paste. Take 1 teaspoon three times a day

5.Mix 1/4 teaspoon of pepper and 1/4 teaspoon of ginger juice to 1/2 spoon of lemon juice and take it twice a day.

6.A glass of buttermilk with 1/4 teaspoon of fenugreek powder once or twice.

7.Roast 2/3 teaspoon of cumin seeds and powder them. Add a pinch each of ginger powder, cinnamon powder and black pepper powder. Mix in 1 cup of yogurt. Eat twice a day.

8.Consuming just a small bowl of curd after your meal helps in dealing with diarrhoea. This helps in maintaining a good bacteria level in the body and thus helps one to get rid of diarrhoea quickly.

9.Coconut water is one of the age-old remedies for preventing dehydration,commonly caused due to diarrhea. It is rich in electrolytes and minerals that not only replenish the lost minerals from the body but also keeps you hydrated.It is wise to drink a glass of water every two to three hours.

10.Treat diarrhea at the source with a piping hot cup of  lemon tea. Simply infuse the lemon in warm water and add a dash of honey if desired. The tea offers a citrus flavor with a touch of sweetness.
